How to Prepare a Vulnerable Roof for a Severe Hurricane

A hurricane can tear the shingles off a vulnerable roof, but there are ways to prevent it. Pull up a seat and discover what it takes strengthen your home’s defenses.

Schedule a Roof Inspection

A professional roof inspection is the best way to cover all of your bases. It’s possible to perform the inspection on your own, but it’s best to hire a roofer because a roofer will know exactly what to look for.

Repair or Replace Loose Shingles

If you have loose shingles on your roof, do not delay the repairs because loose shingles can become projectiles during a hurricane if it produces high winds. In addition, if many shingles are torn off your roof during the hurricane, the plywood underneath it will be exposed, and if it gets soaked, the roof’s foundation will start to rot.

Remove Projectiles

Large and small objects can become projectiles during a hurricane. If a storm intensifies and generates extremely high winds, normal projectiles will fly through the air at Mach speeds. Projectiles that move at this type of velocity can damage the shingles on a roof and the roof itself.

If there are objects on your property that could become projectiles, store these items in a safe place like inside of a garage or a shed.

Cut Down Trees

Tall, oversized trees can be problematic during a severe storm. If there is a very tall tree close to your home, hire someone to remove it. A giant tree could fall on your roof during a hurricane if its roots are not firmly planted into the ground.

Invest in a Tarp

A tarp can be used as part of your defense strategy. If you put one on your roof before a storm, it will protect your shingles against the effects of nature.

After the Storm

After the storm has passed, you may need to schedule another appointment for a roof inspection. It will all depend on how well your roof survived the storm. If a storm produced winds that exceeded 70 mpg, you’ll definitely need a second inspection.
